One Year Anniversary of Helene: Events and Prayers
On Friday September 27th, 2024 Hurricane Helene reached the mountains of North Carolina and forever changed families, lives, landscapes, and memories.
On Saturday Sept 27th this year, there will be a variety of events around the region marking the one-year anniversary. Some of them will be reflective, some will celebrate progress, and almost all are designed to support ongoing healing and community. Below is a list of events that will be updated as we hear more.

EVENTS in WNC for the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene:

Saturday 27th, Marshall, NC: All-day event downtown... 'honoring resilience, celebrating connection, and finding comfort in the community we've built together'....with community reflections at noon, and music and food all day. AND rumor has it, there will be BBQ at Marshall Presbyterian Church provided by one of its session members.

Saturday 27th, 3-7pm, Black Mountain Presbyterian Church: Climate Change and Social Justice Event. Guest speakers. Free to the public, please click the link to let them know you're coming. Also during the 3-4 pm hour and the BBQ reception following the event, attendees can share their remembrances of Helene and its aftermath via video recording in the church library. The remembrances will become a permanent archive of Helene for local history.

Sept 25th and Sept 27: Haywood County (mostly Waynesville): Haywood County will mark the one-year anniversary of Hurricane Helene with a series of commemorations beginning during the opening ceremonies of the annual Haywood County Fair.

A whole series of events from Sept 22-28 are happening in Mitchell County (Spruce Pine, Bakersville), including several community meals, and a 5k run on Sept 27th.

Multiple events in Watauga County (Boone area), including a free 3pm keynote on the 27th from David LaMotte, and a concert (ticketed event) in the evening.

Sept 24-26, Post-Helene symposium at UNC Asheville.

Sept 27, Burnsville, NC (Yancey County). There will be a memorial dedication ceremony at 10am in Burnsville Town Square, followed by a Main Street Fall Festival.
